I prefer ladder climbing, or just climbing games, because shedding is a bit broad but they really have a different feel than the usual trick taking games. It's growing now, but for a while it was frequently 3 or so regulars plus often 2 or 3 people who were quite new. The trick is then won by one of the players per the rules of the game.

Now i only know players in their 50's through 80's that still play it. A player will earn positive points equal to the number of tricks taken if they win an equal number of black and white tricks. Trick takers are almost always one card per player, one round, often have trumps.

Best part is all of these can be played with regular ol' cards! In many trick taking games (though not all), players are required to follow suit, i.e. Players bid on how many tricks they think they will win by privately setting aside 3 cards from their initial hand;
